Rural Australia and carbon fee and dividend – Andrew Hopkins

Andrew Hopkins talks about why Australia’s rural communities – and their representatives – should welcome a steadily rising carbon pollution fee.

One of the objectives of CCL Australia is to encourage a non-partisan climate solutions caucus in our federal parliament. The US Climate Solutions Caucus, a model the Australian Parliament could emulate, has 70+ members, with equal numbers of Republican and Democrat federal politicians working together on lowering climate risk.

Starting a similar Australian caucus means finding conservative MPs keen to get involved in climate solutions, and several have indicated an interest.

In this talk, Andrew Hopkins will explore one way climate solutions can be more appealing to those conservative MPs in rural electorates, many of whom are from the National Party.

It is called carbon farming and involves farmers finding ways to reduce carbon emissions and/or sequester carbon on their land, in return for carbon credits that they can obtain from the government. The farmers can then sell these credits in a growing carbon market, meaning that rural MPs should have an active interest in policies that promote this carbon market.

Andrew Hopkins is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the Australian National University.

He is a member of CCL and writes occasionally on climate change for The Conversation, including his recent article ‘Why the Nationals should support carbon farming, not coal”
