October 19, 2020 – The Bennelong chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby Australia (CCL) hosted an online community event on October 13, 2020.

It featured a presentation from Jo Taranto, co-founder of the social enterprise, Good for the Hood, and resident of Ryde.  She explained her involvement with the popular ABC television series, the War on Waste and Fight for Planet A, which explores the role of communities in tackling the solvable problem of pollution, emissions, and waste.

“I don’t know about changing the United States, or North Korea, or Antartica, or the ice caps.  I can’t control those right now,” said Jo Taranto, “But I can control what happens in my backyard, and on my street, and in the school where my children attend.  There’s a lot we can do in our community and we can make a big difference.”

The event was a chance for Bennelong locals to connect with one another on issues they care about.  The attendees also collaborated on identifying a range of practical solutions they would like to see implemented in Bennelong to tackle individual and collective emissions arising from energy, transport and food.

Fight for Planet A is part of the ABC’s Your Planet, a season of stories exploring our environment and seeking solutions to the climate challenge. Episodes are available to stream on ABC iView.

In addition to hosting events like these, the Bennelong chapter of CCL regularly communicates with John Alexander MP about climate solutions they can support in Parliament.

“Here in Bennelong, we’re already feeling the impact of climate change.  Earlier this year when our Member of Parliament, John Alexander, directly attributed the devastating 2019-20 bushfire crisis to climate change, some of my hope was restored,” said Jordan Hodgson, leader of the Bennelong chapter.  “Events like these help educate more members of our community and show our members of Parliament that Australians are ready for climate action.”

Citizens’ Climate Lobby Australia is a growing group of everyday people, working together to advocate for fair, effective and sustainable climate change solutions.

Bennelong is a Federal electoral division in the Northern Sydney region of New South Wales, including all of the local government area of Ryde, and parts of Hornsby and Parramatta.
