Think there’s nothing new in carbon pricing in Australia? Think again – Warwick Smith
Carbon fee and dividend CFD is a straightforward carbon levying policy that will in effect pay householders to spend on technologies that drive carbon pollution down – so why do MPs we meet seem to never have heard of it?
Warwick Smith looks at what Carbon Fee and Dividend (CFD) is, how the economics and politics stack up for Australia, and how we can aid its implementation.
He says that one of the appeals of CFD is its ability to rapidly move to a substantial price signal while allowing for different transition speeds in different industries, and while avoiding sudden downturns in consumer spending.
Warwick is Senior Economist at progressive public policy think tank Per Capita and an honorary fellow at the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Melbourne. In 2014 he wrote an article for ABC’s The Drum titled ‘Carbon price round 2: let’s get it right this time‘ in which he discussed why a tax and dividend model for carbon pricing is a good idea for Australia.
