Those of us involved with climate activism know it’s a battle with entrenched interests that have led us into a climate emergency. It’s hard to remain cheerful when wedged between denialism and disaster. This month Journalist Rod Taylor will present “CCL, hope and the struggle for a liveable world” – he will talk about why organisations such as CCL are crucial to our sense of hope. In his recent book Ten Journeys on a Fragile Planet he detailed the lives of ten outstanding Australians who have – and are – doing something to confront the perilous state of the environment. He presents their stories, how they’ve succeeded in a time of crisis, and how they’ve maintained hope and what we can learn from them. Read more…
Rod was recently interviewed by Robyn Williams on ABC’s The Science Show. You can listen to the full interview here. Following the talk on Sunday we will divide into groups to discuss the issue. AUS Monthly Guest Speaker (online) @ 4:30pm
4.30 pm NSW, VIC, ACT, TAS | 4 pm SA | 3.30 pm QLD | 3 pm NT | 1.30 pm WA
Dr Tom Denniss set a record in 2013 for the fastest circumnavigation of the world on foot, the 26,000 kilometres taking 20 months and 17 pairs of runners. Now, he has found a new challenge — in the water. His company Wave Swell has created a prototype to harness the power of waves. The Wave Swell Energy (WSE) technology is based on the well-established concept of the oscillating water column (OWC). As waves pass the OWC, the water rises and falls inside, forcing the air to pass by a turbine at the top of the chamber. This turbine generates electricity.
Wave energy as a resource varies much more slowly than wind or solar power, and is highly predictable over periods of several days. Therefore, wave power is considered complementary base load power. It can be used in conjunction with traditional base load sources to provide a constant output to satisfy demand, with a seamless transition between renewables and fossil fuel sources. More info…
