‘No matter what your reason for coming to the debate on climate is, there is room for everyone to want action… It’s time to take the party politics out of this and move forward with a plan.’ Zali Steggall OAM MP speaking at the CCL National Conference 1 November 2020
Independent Federal Member for Warringah, Zali Steggall MP introduced the Climate Change Bill to Parliament on Monday 9 November. The Bill was referred to the House Standing Committee on the Environment and Energy and is now receiving submissions to its public inquiry.
This is the first parliamentary inquiry into why Australia should commit and legislate Net Zero emissions by 2050 and why the Bill’s proposed legal framework will assist every sector in assessing the risks, adaptation and resilience planning that is needed.
We encourage you and your family friends networks to demonstrate your support for this Bill by making an individual submission no later than 5pm on Friday 27 November.
UPDATE to DEADLINE for submissions to the Climate Change Bill Inquiry:
You can now request an extension by emailing email@example.com before COB Friday 27 November. No reason needs to be given for requesting the extension which will be granted to COB Friday 4 December.
Go to our Personal Submission Guide and/or watch Maree’s workshop video below (below Zali’s presentation) for assistance in submitting your own support for the bill.
The Bill aims to ensure Australia has a clear and positive national response to the challenges of climate change through legislation which enshrines into law:
- A Net Zero emissions target by 2050, getting there through emissions reduction plans and emissions budgets
- Risk assessments and adaptation plans, so that the different parts of our continent and economy know the risks of climate change and can prepare for them
- Technology readiness assessment, so that we know the existing and emerging ways we can reduce emissions, with the least risk and cost
- An independent advisory commission (IAC), that can advise the Government, transparently and independently, on our national needs and plans.
