Trees 4 Change – Bruce Ivers

In 2016 Bruce Ivers, a retired farmer, calculated how many trees would need to be planted to offset the entire 2015 baseline emissions of the 15 schools participating in the Climate Clever Schools Program.

He offered to organise school students to plant a range of species to rehabilitate degraded land, re-establish biodiversity and create a habitat that would attract insects, birds and animals, as well as sequestering carbon.

Prompted by the horrific January 2016 bushfires at Yarloop in the WA South and Ardross Primary School students, Bruce organised a pilot program planting 1,800 marri seedlings to provide future food and habitat for the endangered Carnaby’s Black-cockatoos.

In 2017, through hard work and the generous support of WA government’s Natural Resources Management (NRM) program and Royalties for Regions scheme, over 50,000 seedlings were planted by 14 schools by an army of enthusiastic and inspirational students! In 2018, 23 schools have planted over 80,000 seedlings. An additional 12 schools have expressed interest in being involved in 2019.

While schools can purchase carbon offsets, Trees4Change provides real life experiences. Tree planting excursions include a field walk in the bush with Indigenous Elders, where students learn about Indigenous history, culture and relationship to the land. Planting programs can be anything from a half day excursion to a five-day camp. Planting sites are available in Metro areas or on land close enough for day excursions.

Schools outside WA: Bruce is currently planning programs in each state. Please contact Bruce directly – or 0408 855 656.

The ability to run these programs is dependent on external funding through successful grant applications and philanthropic donations.
